The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it. We ask ourselves every day: will we ever return to our old lives? Being at home and isolated has made us look back at the pre-pandemic times with a heavy heart. However, as we mourn socializing in big groups, concerts, busy streets and travel, we tend to forget the problems with the way things were. In discussing those problems now, there is an opportunity for change.
The pandemic has heightened and exposed problems that already existed, but, in many cases, were being swept under the rug. According to UN Women, women have been hit the hardest by this crisis, an outgrowth of the many ways that women are statistically disadvantaged to begin with. To name a few: lower incomes, gender gaps in poverty and stereotypes that have forced mothers (over fathers) to leave their jobs and take care of kids at home during school closures. Bearing these truths in mind, the Feminist Initiative has decided to look forward. We do not want to return to the way things were. We want to move into a future that has changed for the better. While this pandemic has been a curse in many ways, we urge all to seize it as an opportunity to reshape life as we know it and make it a better place for women around the world. The future is now. We start now. Join us.
